Join CHP for an free Provider and Office Staff Continuing Education Conference including sessions on billing, coding, record keeping, HIPAA compliance, and ICD-10.
Based on provider and office staff feedback at previous events, we've expanded our standard You and CHP: Provider and Office Staff Workshop to four concurrent tracks covering a variety of topics relevant to CHP providers and their office staff. Continuing Education
This conference has been approved by NCCAOM for four total PDA Points. (1 AOM-BIO, 2 Ethics, 1 Professional Coursework). The conference has been approved for four hours of continuing education two of which can be used for Ethics (if you take the two hour Ethics course) by the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Physicians.
Clinical Professional Ethics - Instructor: Peter Martin, LAc, LMT - Two hours
This course considers the ethics of the professional-patient relationship (Non-Maleficence, Beneficence, Autonomy) and the ethics of medicine on a social scale (Justice). Participants will learn a framework for ethical decision making and common ethical pitfalls in clinical practice.
Peter Martin, LAc, LMT has a Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) and has been in private practice in Portland, Oregon since 1993. He serves on the Board of Trustees for OCOM and has presented numerous times for The CHP Group and other groups and institutions.
E&M Coding - Instructor: Tom Freedland, DC - One hour
The proper use of CPT® coding is an important administrative and clinical skill to document accurately what goes on during a clinical encounter. Coding for the “evaluation and management” (E/M) portion of an office visit communicates the extent of the clinical thought processes, the severity of the patient’s condition and the complexity of the condition being evaluated. E/M coding represents the skill and time a provider devotes to the evaluation and treatment planning for each patient.
Physical Medicine Coding - Instructor: Tom Freedland, DC - One hour
Physical medicine modalities and procedures are frequently involved in integrative medicine treatment plans, whether by a chiropractor naturopathic physician, acupuncturist or massage therapist. Knowing how to select the proper codes for these procedures allows the provider to communicate effectively about the quality and appropriateness of the medical services.
Tom Freedland, DC holds a degree in Zoology from Long Beach City College and Doctor of Chiropractice from Cleveland Chiropractic College. Dr. Freedland has had a private chiropractic practice in Tigard, OR since 1993, as well as 34 years of public service as a law enforcemnt officer. He is Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) and is a Certified Independent Chiropractic Examiner with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME). As part of the faculty at University of Western States he teaches clinical documentation and assists with the Community Based Internship program.
ICD-10 Basics - Instructor: Charles Simpson, DC - One hour
The transition to ICD-10 will be a challenge to effective patient care. Communication with other health care providers, payers, laboratories, imaging facilities and pharmacies will all be affected by the implementation of this new diagnostic code set. Learning how to code properly in ICD-10 will be crucial to ongoing patient care. This workshop will provide hands-on training for clinicians and their support staff on how to deploy an ICD-10 code set that is relevant to the specialty in their own practice.
This workshop will be limited to 20 participants in each hour to ensure adequate assistance for hands-on experience with the code set.
Dr. Simpson is a founding member of CHP and currently serves as Vice President, Clinical Affairs. Dr. Simpson has more than 27 years’ experience as a chiropractic consultant, and maintained a private clinical practice in Cornelius, Oregon for over 22 years. A graduate of Washington State University, he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) from Western States Chiropractic College.
Dr. Simpson is an active member of various organizations including the American Chiropractic Association and the Chiropractic Association of Oregon. He has written various published articles on complementary medicine, and has been guest lecturer at OHSU and University of Western States.
Clinical Record Keeping for Integrative Healthcare Providers - Instructor: Steve Sebers, DC - One hour
Accurate and complete documentation of the patient-clinician encounter is of paramount importance for the clinician as well as the patient. This is reflected in quality of the clinical record that is produced by the clinician. Documentation of the interaction between the patient and clinician is as important as the actual treatment being provided. This is the living document that provides a record of the patient-clinician encounter in an organized and legible format. Proper record keeping is essential for communication between health care professionals and is required for total patient care. The quality of the patient record may be considered a reflection of the quality of the patient care delivered. Knowing all of the required elements of the clinical record and the preferred methods of documentation is required for good patient care. This is also a requirement to be an effective and respected component of today’s integrated system of health care.
Dr. Sebers is a 1989 graduate of Western States Chiropractic College (now University of Western States) and completed the 408-hour post-graduate Chiropractic Orthopedics program at Western States. He has been in private chiropractic practice since 1989. Dr. Sebers became involved with various committees at CHP in 2001 and joined the company in 2013 as Regional Medical Director.
General Charting for Massage Therapists - Instructor: Minga Guerrero, DC - One hour
Increasingly massage therapists are called on to provide clinical records for patients in their care. This hour-long course will introduce massage providers to the basics of charting including chart identifiers, patient intake forms, charting pain findings, referring provider diagnosis, understanding medico-legal needs in informed consent, charing interval changes in patient condition, and more. A great class for massage therapists or other providers who employ massage therapists in their practice.
Dr. Guerrero has maintain a private chiropractic practice in Portland, Oregon since 1984. With her extensive training in massage therapy, chiropractic and yoga, she understand the charting needs of massage therapists. Dr. Guerrero has served in various positions, including President, on the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners and continues to work with the Board as a consultant. Dr. Guerrero joined The CHP Group in 2013 as Regional Medical Director.
HIPAA Basics - Instructor: Amy King, Privacy Officer at The CHP Group - One hour
This hour-long session will focus on the core privacy and security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for complementary and alternative medicine providers and provide an overview of the September 2013 regulation changes.
Amy King has been with The CHP Group for over 10 years, currently serving as the Director of Quality and Provider Relations. Ms. King became the HIPAA Privacy Officer at The CHP Group in 2011. With a background in Human Resources and Communications, Ms. King has completed multiple HIPAA training courses including the American Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) HIPAA Primer Class and attended the 2014 and 2015 HIPAA Summit Conferences.
